Children Hospital Schools Africa is a non-profit organization which was established along with the Education & Health Foundation of South Africa to create awareness of children that are hospitalized for extensive periods and therefore cannot attend school. This includes rape victims, HIV/AIDS patients, reconstructive surgery and drug abuse.

Every parent or care-giver knows that a school does not only provide education but also basic life skills. Interaction with peers is vital and being left behind socially and academically limits ones confidence and experiences; therefore Hospital Schools enable children to be treated with the necessary hospital care and committed teachers that provide psychological counseling, rehabilitation and regular curriculum instruction from Grade 1 to 12, thus avoiding emotional and academic deprivation. This also allows empowerment for children to fight their handicap and foster a sense of self control on their lives. A Children Hospital School or In-Hospital school is a universal concept, but a focus needs to be placed on the urgency of more hospital schools in South Africa and the maintenance of our existing ones. Our Hospital Schools face numerous challenges that our typical institutions don’t; such as special desks, specialised staff and special equipment over and above the standard equipment. Hospital schools also do not receive school fees from parents and thus many face closure.

CHSA in association with The Education & Health Foundation have been able to create awareness and provide essential knowledge through fundraising projects, discussion groups, children participation and symposiums not only for the children but for parents, teachers and care-givers to better understand the concept and importance of hospital schools and education.

Every child is the future of our world; therefore they should be given hope and opportunities, not be deprived of growing, developing and more importantly, an education.
